Top 10 things to do in Prague

top things to do in prague

Prague is a very special travel destination in Eastern Europe. In this Bohemian city there is so much to do and see. Each cobblestone street of the city lead you to the centre of European history.

Prague has been on my list for a long time. Not only because of its beautiful historical European architecture, but also because of the novels of Franz Kafka, who describes Prague beautifully in a surrealist way.

Here are 10 highlights you shouldn’t miss in Prague.

Old Town Square

This huge square in the heart of Prague is definitely one the most beautiful town squares I’ve seen in Europe. It is surrounded by impressive historical buildings and in the middle there is a statue of Jan Hus, a Czeck religious reformist who is now one of the national symbols of the country. If you visit Prague during Christmas or Eastern holidays, you’ll have the chance to visit the market in this square.

Týn Church

The Týn Church with its town towers is one of the most impressive building in the Old Town Square. Its gothic facade with the shiny gold Virigin Mary image in the middle is dominating the square in the centre of Prague.

Astronomical  Clock

If you see the crowds in front of the Old Town Hall, you’ll know the hourly performance of the Astronomical Clock is taking place. This astronomical clock is third-oldest astronomical clock world wide and the oldest one which still operates.

Next to the clock there are four figures representing Vanity with a mirror, Greed with a bag of money, Death in form of a skeleton and Lust with a music instrument. The 12 statues of the Apostles at the doorways above the clock present every hour. The four figures next to the calendar, are the Chronicler, Angel, Astronomer and Philosopher.

Old Town Hall

The Old Town Hall with its gothic tower, where the Astronomical Clock is placed dates back from 1338. When you join the guided tour you can have a look at the 12 apostles of the Astronomical Clock from inside. From the platform on the top of the tower you have panoramic views of Prague’s Old Town Square.

Charles Bridge

This medieval stone bridge over the Vltava River is a crazy tourist magnet. The Charles Bridge is for pedestrians only and it feels like a fairground with artists selling their handicraft, the musicians make you swing and the 30 statues protect them all.

Eat Trdelnik

You have to try this sweet pastry, originally coming from Romania. It is made from rolled dough that is wrapped around a stick, then grilled and topped with sugar. You can then fill it with anything you want.

Drink a Beer Pilsner-Style

The beer Pilsner Style originates from the town called Pils in Czech Republic, where one of the best beer is produced. The best known label Pilsner Urquell produces beer since 1842. But you don’t need to stick to international famous labels, instead go to a Czech pub to taste regional brews in .

Prague Castle

If you read the novel “Castle” from Franz Kafka you know that the Prague Castle dominates the city from above the Vltava River. The castle complex is one of the largest in the world with an area of 70,000 m2, 570 meters long and 130 meters wide.

Golden Lane

Do you want to know how the Praguer castle guard or goldsmiths lived here in 16th century. Or do you want to see where Franz Kafka (Nr. 22) lived to write his novels. Then don’t miss the Golden Lane. Unfortunately the time I was in Prague the entry to the small street was blocked due to restorations.
