African Safari in Kenya

In Kenya there are more than 20 National Parks which are protected areas for wildlife conservation. These protected areas are some of the best in Africa which offer perfect conditions for wild life observations. It is one of the best countries in East Africa to experience a real African Safari.

In most of the African National Parks you can see lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos, buffalos, cheetahs, wildebeests, giraffes, zebras, impalas, gazelles, hyenas, jackals, ostriches, hippopotamus, baboons, crocodiles, wild boars, and many many more animals.

I’ve been to three National Parks in Kenya where I joined safari game drives for the first time of my life. I was simply amazed. Seeing and observing the animals in their natural environment is an experience everyone should have. Believe me, it has nothing to do with visiting a zoo.

Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West National Park of Kenya is huge. It is 7,065 km². As soon as you drive through the main gate you’ll know that this experience will beat everything. You’ll feel your bond to nature growing stronger.

First of all you’ll be flashed by the colours. The blue in the sky… decorated with whitest clouds… and the red colour of the ground… Simply beautiful.

I stayed at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge. The views from the lodge are breathtaking. It is located near to a big water hole which is very convenient to observe all sorts of animals drinking while you sip on your own drink. 

Don't forget your binoculars.

Amboseli National Park

The landscape in Amboseli National Park is quite different than the Tsavo West NP. There are many green plains where all the animals gather to eat.

You’ll see elephants, zebras, impalas, giraffes, wildebeests and many many more animals wandering around in the plains and far away behind the clouds, you’ll spot the top of the mountain Kilimanjaro covered with snow.

There is one crossing spot where hundreds of elephant walk by every day twice. Early in the mornings to go to the west side of the park to eat and in the evening to turn back to the forest spend the night under the trees.

I stayed at Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge. It was again a perfect stay, with perfect food and views.

Tsavo East National Park

Tsavo East National Park is the largest National Park in Kenya with its 13,747 km². Just imagine, it is bigger than Jamaica.

The yellowish colour dominates the dry landscape of Tsavo East National Park. Nevertheless the wild life is as rich as in other National Parks. We had the chance to see a cheetah walking elegantly and ready to hunt.

I stayed at Ashnil Aruba Lodge, which is the only lodge in Tsavo East. The backyard of Ashnil Aruba Lodge is in the middle of the green plains where the elephants and all other herbivores come to eat, which offered perfect moments observing the elephants and wildebeests eating. Only a (electric) hence separates the garden of the lodge from the field. Nevertheless, if I’d go again I’d rather stay in Galdessa Camp to try the accommodation type with tented camps.

Maasai Mara

Very unfortunate that I haven’t been to the legendary Maasai Mara National Park but it is in my (never-ending) list. I don’t when, but I’m planning to have another safari tour in Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara together to observe the great migration, the largest terrestrial mammal migration in the world.
